PREGNANCY OR POSTNATAL
CONGRATULATIONS
With all the joy that pregnancy and the birth of your baby can bring, there are also a few things that may not be quite what you expected. The blooming phase of pregnancy can accompany aches and pains as your body undergoes changes to accommodate its new lodger. Once your little bundle of joy has arrived, your world is thrown upside down, and your body must adapt to its new role.
Regardless of how you are feeling a pregnancy massage can provide relief for any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing. It can also help you relax and offer some much-needed time for yourself.
Please note: Before seeking pregnancy massage, it’s crucial for expectant mothers to consult with their healthcare provider to ensure that massage is safe for their individual circumstances
It is important to choose a massage therapist trained in pregnancy massage techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the baby. I originally qualified in pregnancy massage when I was pregnant with my second daughter in 2015, I have since done further training in more advanced pregnancy techniques and specific postnatal massage. The comfort of you and the baby are paramount at all times and I will take you through the treatment approach during your initial online consultation.
PREGNANCY MASSAGE
Offers a variety of benefits to expectant mothers, both physically and emotionally. These can include:
- Reduced Muscle Tension and Discomfort: Pregnancy often brings about changes in a woman’s body, including increased weight and changes in posture. This can lead to muscle tension and discomfort. Pregnancy massage helps to alleviate muscle tension, particularly in areas like the lower back, hips, and legs.
- Pain Relief: Expectant mothers commonly experience pain in areas such as the back, neck, shoulders, and hips due to the added stress on the body. Massage can help reduce pain and discomfort by improving circulation and relaxing tight muscles.
- Improved Circulation: Pregnancy can sometimes lead to reduced blood circulation and swelling in the extremities. Massage can enhance blood flow, which may reduce swelling and help in delivering more oxygen and nutrients to both the mother and the baby.
- Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Pregnancy can be a time of increased stress and anxiety. Massage has been shown to promote relaxation by reducing levels of stress hormones and triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals
- Better Sleep Quality: Many pregnant women experience difficulty sleeping due to discomfort or hormonal changes. Massage promotes relaxation and can contribute to better sleep quality by easing muscle tension and reducing stress.
- Hormone Regulation: Massage therapy may positively influence hormone levels, including reducing levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and increasing the release of serotonin and dopamine. These hormonal changes can contribute to an overall sense of well-being.
- Enhanced Mood and Emotional Well-Being: The physical and emotional benefits of massage can contribute to an improved mood and emotional well-being during pregnancy. This is important given the hormonal fluctuations and the various changes a woman experiences during this time.
POSTNATAL OR POSTPARTUM
MASSAGE
Supports women in their recovery after childbirth. It focuses on addressing the physical and emotional changes that occur following the birth of a baby.
Here are some key benefits of postnatal massage:
- Physical Recovery: Postnatal massage aims to help women recover from the physical stress of pregnancy and childbirth. It can alleviate muscle tension, soreness, and pain, particularly in areas such as the lower back, hips, and shoulders.
- Hormonal Regulation: Hormones, such as oxytocin and prolactin, play crucial roles during and after childbirth. Massage can help regulate hormone levels and promote overall well-being. Oxytocin, in particular, is associated with bonding and breastfeeding.
- Reducing Swelling: Some women may experience swelling, especially in the extremities, after giving birth. Massage can help reduce swelling and promote fluid balance.
- Scar Tissue Healing: For women who have had a cesarean section, massage can aid in the healing of scar tissue. It’s essential to wait until the incision or stitches have healed before beginning massage in this area
- Relaxation and Stress Reduction: The postpartum period can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. Massage provides a relaxing and nurturing experience that can help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of postpartum depression.
- Improved Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for postpartum recovery. Massage can contribute to better sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing insomnia.
- Breastfeeding Support: Massage techniques can help address tension in the neck, shoulders, and chest, which can be especially beneficial for women experiencing discomfort related to breastfeeding.
- Emotional Well-being: Postnatal massage can have positive effects on emotional well-being by promoting a sense of comfort, support, and connection. It provides a dedicated time for self-care, allowing new mothers to focus on their own needs.
It is important to note that postnatal massage should be tailored to the individual needs and preferences of each woman. Before starting any postnatal massage practice, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if there are specific health concerns or complications from childbirth.
I have undertaken specific postnatal massage training. I have a keen interest in the area, having researched and written about postnatal runners suffering with lumbopelvic pain for my dissertation as part of my BTEC Level 6 qualification. You can watch my presentation or read more about this here.
I am very aware of the challenges of the postpartum period. I am here to support you in any way I can.
